Spiraea japonica 'Anthony Waterer'

Japanese spiraea

Product Image
A charming and easy to grow addition to the garden, Spiraea japonica 'Anthony Waterer' produces and abundance of carmine pink flowers, which form in tightly packed flattened clusters. The toothed foliage is also attractive, emerging each spring with a bronze-red flush before maturing to a subtle bluish green.

Japanese spiraea is ideal for a sunny, well-drained site, and it makes an excellent specimen in mixed borders. It's also effective when planted to create a colourful, informal flowering hedge.

How to care for Spiraea japonica Anthony Waterer:

Plant Spiraea japonica cultivars in a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-drained, moderately fertile soil, spacing plants 60-90cm (2-3ft) apart. Water regularly while establishing and mulch around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect roots. Feed lightly in early spring to encourage strong growth, vibrant foliage, and abundant flowering.

Prune in early spring before new growth starts to shape the plant and encourage colourful summer foliage and flowers on new wood. For rejuvenation, cut back by about one-third, or harder to 10-15cm (4-6in), removing any old or dead branches. After flowering, deadhead spent blooms in summer to keep the plant tidy and potentially encourage a second flush of flowers.
