This compact evergreen conifer forms a neat, rounded to pyramidal shape, with dense scale-like foliage that is light green through the growing season and develops a warm bronze tint in winter. Its slow growth, typically under 5cm (2in) a year, makes it an excellent choice for small gardens, rockeries, containers, or even trough planting.
The tidy form requires little to no pruning, holding its shape naturally. Fully hardy in the UK, it tolerates a range of soils provided they are well-drained, and it performs best in full sun to light shade. Small cones may appear from autumn, adding seasonal interest. Thuja occidentalis ‘Maks’ is ideal for adding structure and year-round colour without being a maintenance demanding plant providing it is kept watered during dry periods.
How to care for Thuja occidentalis:
Plant in well-draining, slightly acidic soil, in partial to full sun. When establishing this evergreen conifer, ensure consistent soil moisture during the first growing season, watering deeply but infrequently to encourage robust root development.
Apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) layer of organic mulch around the base to retain soil humidity and suppress weed growth. Protect young specimens from harsh winter winds by positioning them in sheltered locations or using temporary windbreak screens.
Prune selectively (wearing gloves) in early spring before new growth emerges, removing only dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain the plant's natural compact form. Using a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring will support healthy growth.
