Flowering from seed in their first year, these reliable, pollinator friendly and prolific annuals are easy to grow. A great, economical option to fill cut flower vases from midsummer. Sowing instructions are included with each seed packet.
Planting tips:
Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. For best results it is essential that the plants are kept well watered for the first year, particularly during warmer weather.
What's included:
In this collection you will receive one packet of seed for each of the following varieties:
Calendula officinalis: Daisy-like flowerheads in a vivid shade of orange, create a wonderful display when they appear in profusion above the softly hairy, aromatic leaves. This fast-growing annual, is ideal for the filling gaps in the border and the flowers last well after being cut. The petals are edible and have a peppery flavour, which can be used to enhance the flavour and add colour to soups, meat, egg and rice dishes as well as salads. Easy and quick to grow, it is a great choice for a children's garden. Grows to 50cm.
Centaurea cyanus 'Black Ball': Ravishing, dark crimson flowers, which look almost black on cloudy days, appear from May to July. They sit on top of upright, branching stems, looking like miniature pom-poms - and are altogether charming. Ideally suited to wildflower meadows or naturalised planting schemes, the flowers will hold their colour well and will attract beneficial insects in their droves. This is an annual plant, which will die after flowering, but in the right conditions it will set seed so you will have more plants the following year. Grows to 40cm.
Cosmos bipinnatus 'Dazzler': Carmine red blooms top the upright stems, clothed with finely divided foliage, of this glorious annual. Flowering from early summer (if sown early) to mid autumn - and sometimes beyond, these easy to grow plants will provide lashing of colour in the garden. The flowers last well after being cut too, and look spectacular with oranges, yellows, lime green and rich purple. Grows to 1m.
Nicotiana 'Lime Green': Masses of fragrant, lime-green, five-petalled flowers from July to September and spoon-shaped, wavy-edged, fresh green leaves. The lime-green flowers of this tobacco plant make excellent and unusual cut flowers. Perfect for the middle of a sunny mixed or annual border, this variety is renowned for its excellent performance during both heat and wet weather. Grows to 75cm.
