walnut (common)

common walnut ( syn. Juglans regia )

Product Image
A large, broad-crowned deciduous specimen tree for open space, with leaves with 5-7 large oblong leaflets, aromatic when bruised. Yellowish catkins give rise to green, globose fruits that in good (and long!) summers ripen into edible walnuts. The nuts do not appear until the tree is approximately 15 years old. Juglans regia has deep roots and much prefers lighter soils that the roots can penetrate.

How to care for walnut common:

Plant in a sunny, open position with plenty of space for its developing canopy and deep root system. When planting, incorporate lots of well-rotted compost into the hole and stake firmly. Keep it well watered for the first couple of seasons and mulch in spring to help conserve moisture.

Avoid heavy pruning, as walnut dislikes hard cuts, and once established it becomes low-maintenance, thriving in most well-drained soils. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late summer to early winter to prevent bleeding.
