Grow your own White Oyster Mushrooms with our outdoor, Log Dowel Kit, giving you all you need to grow and harvest your own crop of edible fungi using your own recently cut hardwood logs, year after year. A great gift for a fungi enthusiasts garden or cook's kitchen garden.

White Oyster Mushrooms have a mild, slightly sweet flavour, and they develop a more meaty texture when cooked. Their delicate taste makes them versatile in cooking, complementing a variety of dishes without overpowering other ingredients. They are often used in stir-fries, soups, pastas, and risottos, or sautéed with garlic and herbs as a side dish. White oyster mushrooms can also be grilled or roasted to enhance their earthy notes and chewy texture.

Your White Oyster Log Dowel Kit will need to be kept in a cool (ideally around 5°C) place, or at the back of the fridge until opening within 1 month of purchase. Your kit will be fine out of the fridge for a day or two if gifting or while in transit.

How to care for White oyster mushrooms:

Once delivered, your dowels will need to be used within a month of receipt. If you’re not ready to use them straight away, keep them in the fridge. It’s best to source hardwood logs that have been felled within 6-8 weeks. Make sure the edges and bark of your logs has not been compromised and are in the best condition to give your mycelium the greatest chance to get growing. Our 30 dowels kits are sufficient for a 10-20cm diameter log, approximately 50cm long. If your logs are bigger, you can order more dowels. You will need an 8.5mm wood drill piece.

Harvest your mushrooms once the largest in the flush begin to flatten out at the edge of the mushroom. You may need to harvest a little earlier before your garden mini beast begin to enjoy them first.

For our outdoor log kit option, mushroom logs like to be kept moist and will need watering along with the rest of your plants throughout the year and especially throughout any dry spells. Keep your log protected from harsh winds and out of direct sunlight.

Our Log Dowel Growing Kit is designed for outdoor use, and for those naturally using their own cut (unseasoned) logs with no signs of damage or naturally using their own cut (unseasoned) logs. It contains: 30 inoculated timber dowels inside a sterilized plastic grow bag with filter patch, wax, sponge applicator and full set of instructions. We advise using fresh or recently felled (up to 8 weeks) hardwood logs up to 50cm in length (10-20cm in diameter) such as alder, hazel, hornbeam, oak, cherry, beech, birch or chestnut. We recommend avoiding sycamore and ash. Please note that holes will need to be pre-drilled to accommodate the dowels (we recommend an 8.5mm drill bit). Using the dowel method, we deliberately introduce our mushroom mycelium into the body of freshly felled timber, making sure it stands the best chance of success. You should expect to see your first mushrooms from 1 year to 18 months after your logs have been inoculated. Once fruiting, you could be harvesting fresh mushrooms for approximately 3 years. Please note: It is not recommended so mix different strains of mushroom dowels within one log. If want to grow a variety of mushrooms, we advise allocating only one type per log.
Approx. weight: 200g
Dimensions: 24.5 x 16.5 x 4cm
