Kampi gardeners rain gauge

Product Image
Our new galvanised steel rain gauge will help you keep track of rainfall in your garden so as not to overwater.

Too much watering can encourage disease and waste water. This gauge gives you a reliable indicator of how much water plants have had so you can adjust your watering schedule.

As well as ad hoc checks, you can also use it to keep a log of precipitation. This will help you plan ahead, fine tune your selection of plants and choose the right time for planting.

Designed with a wide stable base, the gauge holds a burnished brass catchment funnel, 100ml glass measuring beaker and metal overflow canister inside.

The rain falls down the funnel into the glass beaker. When this is full, it overflows into the removable lidded canister.

Over time the brass funnel will develop a natural patina, which can be buffed back to its original finish with the scouring pad supplied.

Instructions:

Place the gauge in a spot away from anything that will provide shelter from the rain.

To take a reading, first remove the funnel and set it aside. Take out the canister containing the glass beaker and read off the beaker measurement.

Each 10ml of water equates to 1mm of rainfall. So, for example, if it reads 100ml, this equates to 10mm of rain.

If very heavy rainfall has filled the beaker completely and overflowed into the canister, you’ll need to measure in stages.

Tip any excess over the 100ml mark back into the canister, leaving you with exactly 100ml in the beaker. Discard this water and pour in the next lot from the canister, up to the 100ml mark.

Repeat until the canister is empty - remembering to keep track of how much you’ve measured!

It’s best to take the measurements at more or less the same time of day if you are keeping a record. The rain gauge should be accurate to +/- 2mm of rainfall.

Please note: over winter, we advise removing and storing the glass beaker indoors between uses. Freezing water will expand and may crack the glass.
