A useful plant for the edge of a shady border, ajuga also makes good groundcover as it soon knits together to form an evergreen carpet. This one has large, glossy, bronze-purple leaves with dense, upright spires of purple spring flowers. This variety is perfect for covering large areas since it has bigger leaves and is particularly vigorous. It also copes well with sun and poor soils, but does not like to dry out.
How to care for Ajuga reptans Catlin's Giant:
Plant in moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade where it will thrive, though it will also tolerate full shade. It's a spreading ground cover, so it space to form a mat, and avoid planting too close to other low-growing plants.
Keep watered in dry spells until established, then it’s generally low maintenance. Cut back any faded flower spikes and trim back runners if they spread too far.
To rejuvenate and minimise congestion, lift and divide clumps in late autumn or early spring every few years.
