Butomus umbellatus

flowering rush

Product Image
A beautiful flowering rush that looks great planted in bold swathes at the edges of the pond, but will also grow in reliably moist soil in bog and marsh gardens.

The upright, needle-like foliage of Butomus umbellatus will help create vertical interest, and throughout the summer tall stems are topped with large, cup-shaped clusters of star-shaped, flowers.

How to care for Butomus umbellatus:

Position Butomus in full sun, ideally at the shallow edge of a pond or in boggy ground where the crown can sit just below the waterline. Avoid deep water planting.

Anchor in aquatic baskets using loam-based compost topped with gravel to stop it floating. Remove spent flower stems to tidy and encourage further blooming. Divide congested clumps in early spring before growth restarts.
