When we discovered this amazing plant at one of the plant fairs we just had to have it! It produces masses of flowers just like the much-loved climbing form, but it grows as a relatively compact shrub, which lends itself particularly well to patio pots. The flowers have a deliciously sweet perfume and will appear over a long period from midsummer onwards - and they are loved by bees and butterflies.
How to care for Lonicera periclymenum Strawberries and Cream:
To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.
Once established, trim back lanky stems after flowering and remove up to a third of the oldest stems. In early spring. apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant, avoiding the immediate crown.
