A gorgeous North American native, with glossy green leaves and clusters of creamy white flowers from early summer. However, it is for the big bunches of berries that follow on in autumn that it is primarily grown. When these first appear, they are a soft green, but they change colour, first turning white, then pink, then blue and finally near-black. The overall effect is very colourful as there are usually different coloured berries in each cluster, however to be sure of berries it is recommended that you have more than one plant. By the time the berries are fully mature, the foliage turns crimson, thus producing a dramatic backdrop. It makes a wonderful addition to the shrub border, where it will provide lots of late colour.
