• 1 x Rosa 'Reine des Violettes': Many petalled, lilac-purple flowers are produced in a big flush in midsummer and then intermittently until autumn. They have a good fragrance and their colouring works well against the backdrop of the greyish-green foliage, which appears on near thorn-free stems. A beautiful rose with plenty of old-world charm. Grows to 1.5m. Supplied in a 4-litre pot (but field grown, so potted up in winter).
  
  
• 3 x Astrantia major 'Claret': This is one of the darkest-flowered astrantias, with deep, ruby red pincushion-like flowers with a ruff of longer bracts than many other varieties. The leaves are pretty, too; deeply lobed and dark green. Although it is an old cottage-garden favourite, this astrantia works equally well in contemporary-style plantings. Use towards the front of a sunny, yet moist border, where the flower colour can be fully appreciated. Grows to 90cm. Supplied in 9cm nursery pots.
  
  
• 3 x Salvia × sylvestris 'Mainacht': A delightful, colourful plant with spikes of indigo-blue flowers in early to midsummer. This reliable perennial is ideal for the middle of a moist, well-drained herbaceous border. It flourishes in sun or dappled shade where the bright flowers help to liven up any plant scheme. Grows to 75cm. Supplied in 9cm nursery pots.
