This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: fast
  • Flowering period: June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

The arching branches of this graceful flowering shrub are festooned with clusters of fragrant, lilac flowers, in June that are highly attractive to butterflies. A perfect focal point plant for a sunny border, it's often grown as a standard. In autumn the pointed, dark green leaves turn an attractive shade of yellow.

  • Garden care: When planting, add some well-rotted compost or manure and mycorrhizal fungi to the planting hole. Prune when it has finished flowering in midsummer by cutting back all the stems that have flowered to healthy buds to produce flowering wood for the following season, and apply a generous mulch of conditioned compost around the base of the plant.
