Snake's head fritillary are much-loved for their nodding, bell-shaped flowers, which rise above the grass-like, grey-green foliage. Ideal for naturalised planting schemes, they are often seen partnered with ornamental grasses, but they will also look charming in mixed borders or patio pots.

How to care for Fritillaria meleagris collection:

Plant 12cm (5in) deep from September to November in fertile soil, taking care not to damage the fragile bulbs.

  • 10 × Fritillaria meleagris var. unicolor subvar. alba: A gorgeous sight in mid- to late spring, when the pretty white flowers appear on slender stems. Grows to 30cm.

  • 10 × Fritillaria meleagris: Deep claret-purple to pinkish purple or even occasionally white flowers, each with distinctive checkerboard markings on their petals, appear in April and May. Grows to 30cm.
