Ceanothus 'Puget Blue'

Californian lilac

Product Image
In mid-spring, this spreading, evergreen shrub is an arresting sight, smothered in dense clusters of dark blue flowers. It makes a superb informal hedge or specimen plant for a south or west-facing border among spring-flowering bulbs, and even after it's finished flowering, it provides an excellent foil for those shrubs and perennials that come into bloom later in the year. Ceanothus 'Puget Blue' needs a protected site, as the deeply veined, dark green leaves are easily scorched by cold, drying winds.

How to care for Ceanothus Puget Blue:

Ceanothus prefers a sunny, sheltered spot in well-drained soil and dislikes sitting wet in winter, so avoid heavy soils prone to waterlogging. Once planted, water regularly during the first growing season to help establish, then reduce as it becomes more drought tolerant.

Avoid feeding with high-nitrogen fertilisers, as this can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Prune after flowering by cutting back stems lightly to shape (avoid hard pruning into old wood unless wishing to regenerate from the base).

Mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the woody stems.
