cornfield collection
- Position: full sun
- Soil: poor, well-drained soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Hardiness: fully hardy
These summer-flowering wildflowers can be used in the border as an alternative to seasonal bedding, adding colour as well as helping to sustain the ecosystem.
One packet contains 2 grams of seed, which will cover approximately 2 square metres.
The collection contains:
charlock – Synapses alba
cornflower – Centaurea cyanus
corn Chamomile – Anthemis arvensis
corn Marigold – Chrysanthemum segetum
field forget-me-not – Myosotis arvensis
field poppy – Papaver rhoeas
white campion – Silene latifolia - Garden care: Rake the soil well to form a fine tilth and then sow seeds, scattering them evenly before raking them in and firming down. Keep them well watered initially and remove any weeds if they appear. Wildflowers prefer poor soils so avoid using fertilisers. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering, and in autumn, after the plants have spread their seed, cut them down to the ground before adding to the compost bin.
- Sow: March - May or September - October
- Flowering: August - September or May - July
