Corylopsis spicata

spike witch hazel

Product Image
This medium-sized, deciduous shrub features an open, spreading habit and eye-catching, bristled, toothed leaves, which are bright green on top and blue-green underneath. As the leaves emerge, the buds transition from dark red to deep green, adding early spring interest. Corylopsis spicata produces fragrant, pale yellow flowers with red anthers in long, pendulous racemes on bare stems, offering a striking display in spring. Hardy, yet best grown in sheltered spots, this shrub thrives when protected from strong winds and late spring frosts, making it a great choice for a well-positioned garden corner.

How to care for Corylopsis spicata:

Plant in a partially shaded or full sun spot with shelter from strong winds, as it can be sensitive to harsh conditions. It thrives in moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil that is rich in organic matter. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells, to maintain soil moisture. Protect the shrub from late spring frosts, which can damage new growth and blooms. To maintain a healthy, open framework remove any misplaced or crossing shoots immediately in spring after the plant has flowered. After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of composted pine needles or well-rotted leaf mould around the base of the plant.
