Larger than average, irregularly striped flowers top the stems in late winter and early spring. An undemanding crocus, it looks great when drifted through the front of the border, or when used to line the edges of a path. It adds a bright splash of early colour, and it can also be used in patio pots or window boxes.

Garden care: Plant bulbs in naturalistic drifts 10cm (4in) deep in September or October. Where bulbs are planted in grass do not cut the lawn until after the leaves have died back.
