Many flowers are safe to eat and they look great when sprinkled over salads and desserts as a garnish, or fozen into ice cubes to add colour to summer drinks. These pretty flowering plants will also help jazz up a sunny kitchen garden too.

Planting tips:

Incorporate lots of well-rotted leaf mould or garden compost when planting. Protect young plants from slug-damage using environmentally friendly slug pellets or beer traps and keep them well watered until they are well established.

The Viola seeds can be sown under cover from March, into trays trays of good seed compost and gradually hardened off before planting out. Alternatively sow directly into a well-prepared seed bed in late spring or late summer and early autumn.

What's included:

This collection contains a mix of seeds and potted plants. You will receive one of each of the following plants, each in a 9cm nursery pot:

  • Anchusa azurea 'Loddon Royalist': Sturdy stems of deep blue summer flowers, turning blue-purple with age, appear in early summer above rosettes of mid-green leaves. This large blue alkanet makes a striking and long-lasting statement in a sunny border and does not need staking. The flowers are attractive to bees, too. Grows to 1m.

  • Allium schoenoprasum: One of the main reasons for growing chives is to harvest the edible leaves, which enhance the flavour of many savoury dishes, but the brilliant pink to purple or white, button-like summer flowers are also edible. It's perfect for a sunny, well-drained border or gravel garden. Grows to 60cm.

  • Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote': A compact form of the popular English lavender, it produces dense spikes of fragrant, deep violet summer flowers above slender, aromatic, silvery-grey leaves. It is possibly the best lavender for edging paths and borders and the aromatic foliage perfumes the air if you brush against it. It also works well in a gravel garden, or clipped into a formal sphere for a contemporary look. Grows to 60cm.

You will also recieve one packet (containing approximately 50 seeds) of:

  • Viola odorata: Sweetly scented, violet-blue flowers from February to March and heart-shaped, bright green leaves. Sweet violets are perfect for naturalising in a shady woodland garden or shrub border in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Much loved by Victorian dandies, the blooms make delightful cut-flower posies, are excellent when chrystallised, add an exotic-looking touch to the salad bowl and can be used to adorn cakes, desserts and iced drinks. Grows to 20cm.
