Unlock the captivating allure of these beautiful gems in deep wine-red, lilac-pink, and regal purple-red. Dahlia 'Arabian Night' enchants with masses of fully double, almost black flowers from June until the first frosts, a perfect companion for plum-coloured flowers and foliage plants. Joining the ensemble, 'Dark Spirit' adds depth and structure with its richly-coloured, neatly shaped blooms, flourishing in borders or pots on sunny patios, and beautifully in bouquets. Completing the trio, 'Thomas A. Edison' mesmerises with its medium-sized blooms, crammed with magenta pink petals, a versatile addition to any colour scheme and a delightful choice for cutting.
How to care for Garden jewels dahlia collection:
Dahlia tubers can be planted outside after frost, or started off in pots under glass in late winter to early spring. Plant them horizontally approximately 12cm deep, making sure the ‘eyes’ are uppermost. Allow enough room between each tuber so the plants can grow and spread to their full size without being over-crowded. While in growth, provide a high-nitrogen liquid feed each week in June, then a high-potash fertiliser each week from July to September. Stake with canes or brushwood if it becomes necessary. In mild areas, leave them in situ over winter, but protect the crown with a generous layer of dry mulch. In colder areas, carefully lift and clean the tubers once the first frosts have blackened the foliage and allow them to dry naturally indoors. Then place the dry tubers in a shallow tray, just covered with slightly moist potting compost, sand or vermiculite and store in a frost-free place until planting out again.
What's included:
In each collection you will receive one tuber of each of the following cultivars:
- Dahlia 'Arabian Night': 'Arabian Night' has masses of fully double, dark wine-red flowers, each with slightly incurved petals from June until the first frosts. Under certain light the petals of this small dahlia appear almost black. An ideal companion for plum-coloured flowers and foliage plants, it needs a sheltered, sunny site with fertile, humus-rich soil. Grows to 120cm.
- Dahlia 'Dark Spirit': The rich colouring of the flowerheads adds depth and body to the colour palette, while their neat, uniform shape provides structural interest. A stunning addition to the border, it will also flourish in a pot on a sunny patio - and the flowers will last for ages when cut for the vase. Grows to 90cm.
- Dahlia 'Thomas A. Edison': We wanted this decorative dahlia included as its flower colour is so easy to mix with a wide range of other shades. The medium-sized blooms are crammed with magenta pink petals, which tend to be a touch paler towards their outer edges. They are also excellent for cutting, which will encourage more to form. Grows to 1m.
