This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: well-drained
  • Rate of growth: fast
  • Flowering period: March to September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This cracking new geum wowed the judges at the RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year 2016 competition, where it picked up second place. It is a sterile hybrid, so produces lots of larger than average apricot-flushed reddish flowers over an impressively long period. Its first flush starts in mid-spring, after which the plant usually takes a short break before going on to flower uninterrupted into the autumn. Bred by Elizabeth MacGregor (who also gave us Anemone Wild Swan) in Scotland, this new geum is a cross between G. 'Beech House Apricot' and G. chiloense 'Red Dragon'.

  • Garden care: To prolong flowering, deadhead regularly. Lift and divide large clumps in early spring or late autumn.
