Iris ensata
Japanese iris ( syn. Iris kaempferi )
This pond plant dies right back in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
- Position: full sun or partial shade
- Soil: damp to wet, humus-rich, acidic soil
- Depth of water: 0-15cm (0-6in)
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: May to July
- Hardiness: fully hardy
An elegant addition to pond or stream margins, this Iris is also suitable for smaller gardens where it can be used in watertight pots or barrels. Its upright, strappy leaves make a great contrast to a flat expanse of water, while the showy summer flowers add impact and colour. - Garden care: Plant out in reliably moist soil, or pot up into a pond basket and place at the margins of a pond. Cut back flowers and foliage as they fade.
- Humans/Pets: Harmful if eaten
