Step into the world of living art with our Old Master's tulip collection, featuring 'Carnaval de Rio' with its streaked red and white petals, 'Helmar' boasting yellow blooms kissed by red, and 'Gavota' flaunting unique chocolate-red streaks and chunky yellow borders, adding artistic flair to your garden canvas.

How to care for Old masters tulip collection:

Using fresh, good-quality compost, plant bulbs in pots from September to November. For borders, we advise waiting until after the first frosts (typically mid-October to early December depending on your location) to reduce the risk of potential disease such as Tulip Fire. Plant bulbs 15-20cm (6-8in) deep and 10-15cm (4-6in) apart in fertile, well-drained soil. Alternatively, allow 7-9 bulbs per 30cm sq or 60-75 bulbs per m². If you’re unable to plant your bulbs immediately, they can be stored in a cool environment with good air circulation. Remove all the packaging and place them in a loose-weave jute sack before labelling and hanging up in a dry, unheated garden shed or well-ventilated greenhouse.

In spring, when the plants are in active growth, apply a high-potash fertiliser (like Tomorite) each week until the leaves start to die back. Pinch off the spent flower heads as the petals fall, and let the stem and foliage die back naturally. The bulbs can then be lifted and discarded, or cleaned, dried and stored (as before) for replanting the following autumn.

What's included:

In this combination you will receive the following:

  • 10 × Tulipa 'Carnaval de Rio':Streaked rich red and creamy white petals form cup-shaped flowers, which top robust stems and open to form magnificent bowls. The two-tone colouring of 'Carnaval de Rio' makes them excellent for mixing with plain reds, such as 'Pallada' or ‘Renegade’, or whites such as ‘Calgary’ or ‘White Dream’. Plant more than you need, perhaps in containers, as they also make great, long-lasting cut flowers. Grows to 50cm.

  • 10 × Tulipa 'Helmar': Arguably the most welcome, colourful, and exuberant splash of colour following the winter months, ‘Helmar’ is a bright and cheerful plant with primrose-yellow, cup-shaped Triumph tulip flowers that look like they have been licked with raspberry red paint. Luscious and plump in bud, the petals sit on top of sturdy stems which make them good in exposed spots from late April through to May. An excellent cut-flower candidate with an outstanding vase life. Grows to 45cm.

  • 10 × Tulipa 'Gavota': A weather-resistant Triumph tulip with maroon-purple petals margined by a chunky band of yellow. An excellent mixing tulip for tying in other red and yellow spring flowering bulbs, 'Gavota' is also a stand-out tulip for bedding schemes with similarly exuberant wallflowers such as 'Sugar Rush Red' or 'Sugar Rush Primrose'. Grows to 50cm.
