This new, woody-based perennial hibiscus produces the most amazing reddish pink summer flowers, which can grow up to 18cm (7in) across. The purple-flushed foliage forms a wonderful backdrop and is handsomely lobed, so even while not in bloom, it offers textural interest and colour contrast towards the back of the border.
Hibiscus moscheutos Carousel Pink Passion is easy to grow and very hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as -15° C, , providing the soil is not prone to waterlogging.
How to care for Hibiscus moscheutos Carousel Pink Passion (Tahi16') (PBR):
Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot with moist, well-draining soil. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially in dry spells, watering deeply rather than little and often to encourage strong root growth.
Feed regularly with a balanced liquid fertiliser every two weeks from spring until late summer, switching to a high-potassium feed like tomato fertiliser to promote abundant blooms.
In autumn, apply a thick mulch of compost or well-rotted manure around the base to insulate the roots and retain moisture. This hardy perennial dies back completely in winter, so leave the stems intact for added protection before cutting them back to its woody base in early spring.
