In summer, this small evergreen shrub produces hooded, lilac-pink flowers that encircle the upright stems, creating a tiered effect. Perfect towards the front of a sunny border with well-drained soil, the woolly, grey foliage is aromatic, so it also makes a good candidate for a sensory garden.
How to care for Phlomis italica:
For the best results choose a sheltered site away from cold, drying winds and prune each year in mid-spring. Shorten any frost-damaged stems, cutting back to just above a healthy bud, and remove any weak or diseased shoots, cutting cleanly back to the base.
