Tolerant of heat and drought once established, this compact evergreen forms a neat, rounded shrub with a dense, bushy habit. It has glossy, leathery dark green leaves that stay attractive year-round.
In late spring to early summer, it produces masses of white, star-shaped flowers with a light fragrance. These blooms are long-lasting and appear in showy clusters, making a striking contrast against the foliage.
Rhaphiolepis indica 'White Cloud' prefers full sun and thrives best in a sheltered position, away from cold, drying winds. It works well in a mixed border, coastal garden, or planted against a warm, south-facing wall. It can also be grown in a large container in milder areas but the plant benefits overall from winter protection in colder areas.
How to care for Rhaphiolepis indica White Cloud (PBR):
Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil, ideally near a south-facing wall or in a warm border. Improve heavy or poorly drained soil with grit or organic matter before planting.
Water regularly during dry spells in the first year to help it establish. Once settled, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and mulch annually to retain moisture, reduce weeds, and feed the soil.
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape if needed, but heavy pruning isn't necessary. Protect from harsh winter frosts in colder areas, or grow in a large container using loam-based compost, that can be moved if needed. Avoid overly wet winter ground conditions.
Soil:
Moderately fertile, moist, but well-drained soil, or general-purpose loam-based potting compost
