Rhododendron molle subsp. japonicum Pink Star ('Mapo 2') (PBR)

Product Image
Perfect for small gardens or container displays, this compact shrub produces masses of rich pink, star-shaped blooms in spring. Its slender, dark green foliage is semi-evergreen, giving year-round structure in milder areas.

Rhododendron 'Pink Star' forms a tidy, naturally rounded shape and stays compact, making it ideal for patios, courtyards or smaller borders. It grows best in acidic, humus-rich soil with good drainage and benefits from a spot with light shade or morning sun.

Low-maintenance and hardy, it requires minimal pruning and reliably flowers even in cooler UK regions. Its unusual flower shape and long bloom time add standout appeal in a charming, compact package.

Please note that the pot in the photograph is not supplied with the plant (which is sent out in a simple nursery alternative), but we have a wide and wonderful range on our website to choose from.

How to care for Rhododendron molle subsp. japonicum Pink Star ('Mapo 2') (PBR):

When planting, avoid planting too deeply, and incorporate well-rotted compost or manure into the planting hole, adding some mycorrhizal fungi to aid root establishment.

If planting in a pot, ensure good drainage, and use an ericaceous or loam based general purpose compost.

Remove spent flower spikes regularly to encourage prolonged flowering. In late autumn, after flowering has finished, cut back any dead or damaged growth to maintain a tidy shape. In early spring, prune lightly to remove any winter-damaged stems and to promote strong, healthy new growth.

Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of leaf mould around the base of the plant each spring. Protect from strong winter winds.
