Schizachyrium scoparium 'Ha Ha Tonka' (PBR)

little bluestem

Product Image
Slender blue-green foliage forms a dense clump, from which the wispy flowerspikes are jettisoned in late summer - around the same time as the foliage takes on a purplish red hue.

The foliage colour of this striking grass then continues to intensify in autumn, becoming redder and redder before dying back for in winter.

Schizachyrium scoparium 'Ha Ha Tonka' was selected and introduced by Piet Oudolf, and is often seen gracing his prairie-style garden designs.

How to care for Schizachyrium scoparium Ha Ha Tonka (PBR):

This ornamental grass thrives in dry, low-fertility soils and is low maintenance. Plant in sharply drained soil in full sun for the best results, and avoid overwatering or over-fertilising, especially in containers, as this can lead to weak growth, flopping, and increased susceptibility to disease.

Cut back old stems to their base in early winter to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage new growth. Larger clumps can be divided in spring to rejuvenate the plant and create additional specimens.

Ensuring good drainage is essential to keep this grass healthy and looking its best.
