Grow your own Nameko Mushrooms with our outdoor, Log Dowel Kit, giving you all you need to grow and harvest your own crop of edible fungi using your own recently cut hardwood logs, year after year. You can even get growing on your redundant Christmas tree next January!

Nameko mushrooms have a mild, slightly nutty flavour with a subtle earthiness and a hint of sweetness. When cooked, they develop a silky texture and their natural glaze gives a bit of a slippery, buttery feel, which adds to their appeal in soups, stews, and stir-fries. Like other mushrooms, they offer antioxidants and have potential immune-boosting properties.

Your Nameko Mushroom Log Dowel Kit will need to be kept in a cool place, until opening ideally below 5°C or at the back of the fridge is a great place to store. Open within 1 month of purchase. Your kit will be fine out of the fridge for a day or two if gifting or while in transit. They are one of only a few that will grow on fir or pine trees, and what a great way to put your old Christmas tree to use. They’ll take 9-12 months to inoculate, and will fruit after the first frost or snowfall of the winter.

Our Log Dowel Growing Kit is designed for outdoor use for those wishing to grow naturally using their own cut (unseasoned) logs with no signs of damage or other fungal growth.

How to care for Nameko mushrooms:

Once delivered, your dowels will need to be used within a month of receipt. If you’re not ready to use them straight away, keep them in the fridge. It’s best to source hardwood logs that have been felled within 6-8 weeks. Make sure the edges and bark of your logs has not been compromised and are in the best condition to give your mycelium the greatest chance to get growing. Our 30 dowels kits are sufficient for a 8-18cm diameter log, approximately 50cm long. If your logs are bigger, you can order more dowels. You will need an 8.5mm wood drill piece.

Harvest your mushrooms once the caps are fully formed but still closed over the gills. Ideally, harvest them when the caps are about 2-4cm in diameter, before they open too much, as this is when their texture and flavour are at their best.

For our outdoor log kit option, mushroom logs like to be kept moist and will need watering along with the rest of your plants throughout the year and especially throughout any dry spells. Keep your log protected from harsh winds and out of direct sunlight.

What's included:

Each kit contains 30 inoculated timber dowels inside a sterilized plastic grow bag with filter patch, wax, sponge applicator, full set of growing instructions, postage box and branded sleeve. We advise using fresh or recently felled (up to 8 weeks) hardwood logs up to 50cm in length (6-12cm in diameter) such as cherry, oak, beech, birch, poplar, chestnut, fir, hornbeam, spruce or willow. We recommend avoiding sycamore, ash and conifers.

Please note that holes will need to be pre-drilled to accommodate the dowels (we recommend an 8.5mm drill bit). Using the dowel method, we deliberately introduce our mushroom mycelium into the body of freshly felled timber, making sure it stands the best chance of success. You should expect to see your first mushrooms from 1 year after your logs have been inoculated. Once fruiting, you could be harvesting fresh mushrooms for approximately 3 years. Please note: It is not recommended to mix different strains of mushroom dowels within one log. If want to grow a variety of mushrooms, we advise allocating only one type per log.
