The number one pest in the garden will usually leave these unpalatable plants alone.

Planting tips:

Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. For best results it is essential that the plants are kept well watered for the first year, particularly during warmer weather.

What's included:

In this collection you will receive one of each of the following plants. They are all supplied in a 9cm nursery pot.

  • Aquilegia 'Blue Barlow': Intensely coloured violet blue sepals, that provide a vibrant contrast to the yellow stamens, form slightly nodding or outward-facing flowers on stiff, upright stems. It looks very effective when planted next to silver foliage, and the flowers will last well in cut arrangements. Grows to 90cm.

  • Penstemon 'Raven': Elegant spikes of small, tubular, foxglove-like flowers appear from July to October among lance-shaped, bright green leaves. This easy-to-grow perennial will quickly form large, leafy clumps and is perfect for adding a splash of colour to the middle of a sunny, well-drained border. If you deadhead regularly, the flowers will persist until the first frosts. The rich, deep purple flowers of this variety contrast particularly well with purples and acid greens. Grows to 100cm.

  • Euphorbia wallichii: A variable, but sturdy form that has white-veined, dark green leaves, often with a purple-flushed edge, and bright yellow flowerheads throughout the summer. This spurge looks great in a planting scheme based on hot, vibrant colours and will prefer a spot in full sun, although it is tolerant of a little light shade. Grows to 60cm.

  • Geranium 'Orion': A bigger geranium, which is covered with clear violet-blue flowers, with red veining and a white centre, throughout the summer. Its spreading habit makes it ideal for quick growing, summer groundcover. Grows to 80cm.
