tayberry 'Medana'

tayberry Medana

5 year guarantee
bare root plant £9.99

This plant is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: well-drained, moderately fertile, preferably acidic soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Fruiting period: July and August
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A tayberry of Scottish origin, ‘Medana’ has reddish-purple fruits, sumptuous as a compôte or purèe enjoyed with yoghurt, ice cream or for a fruity twist, added to your muesli. The fruits freeze well so you can enjoy these tayberries well into the winter. Flowering in spring, this berry is great for bees and other beneficial insects, although this fruit is self-pollinating so will form fruit without them.

  • Garden care: Plant this tayberry as soon as conditions allow and when soil is not frozen or water-logged. Fruit is produced on the previous year’s shoots. Tie in new shoots – these will flower and fruit in the second year. Cut away all fruiting canes after harvest and replace them with new vigorous shoots and the most vigorous of the older ones. Cut back weak and damaged shoots in Autumn. In Spring apply a general fertiliser.
