Toona sinensis 'Flamingo'

Chinese mahogany

Product Image
A deciduous, often multi-stemmed tree, which makes a fine specimen in a sunny garden. In spring, the big, pinnate leaves emerge a bright salmon pink and gradually change colour to creamy yellow and later rich green in summer.

The clusters of greenish-white, cup-shaped flowers that appear in summer seem to dangle from the ends of the branches and are loved by insects. All parts of the plant are scented and the wood is often burnt in temples in Eastern Asia to infuse them with its delicate scent. The timber of Toona sinensis 'Flamingo' is also valuable for making furniture as it is very durable and easy to work with.

How to care for Toona sinensis Flamingo:

Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot with fertile, well-drained soil to achieve the best leaf colour, planting at the same depth as it was growing and watering well to establish. Keep young plants evenly moist, mulching each spring with 5-7cm (2-3in) of well-rotted compost or manure to conserve moisture and improve the soil, then water only during prolonged dry spells once established.

Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove damaged or poorly placed branches or to encourage a fresh flush of colourful growth, avoiding pruning later in the season, and protect young plants from cold winds and late frosts until fully established.
