Masses of fragrant, pea-like, lilac-blue to pale violet-blue flowers in May and June, followed in hot summers by velvety, green seed-pods. This beautiful Chinese wisteria is a particularly free-flowering variety, renowned for its superior fragrance. Ideal for training over a sunny wall or strong pergola, to ensure success the twining stems need careful pruning.
This plant has been vegetatively propagated, so will flower earlier than those grown from seed.
To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.
After planting prune back the leading shoot to 90cm (36in) above the ground. In the first growing season tie in lateral shoots and cut back sub-lateral shoots to two or three buds. During the first winter cut back laterals by one third and sub-laterals by two or three buds.
