The inspiration for this garden has come from the Dutch art movement, which in this case is best illustrated by the work of Mondrian. The De Stijl artists abstracted form into rectilinear shapes and chose a palette of primary colours. Marcus Barnett has used this idea to distil the landscape he knew as child into a grid-like pattern, which is as interesting when seen from an upstairs window as it is on the ground. The planting demands a greater saturation of colour than is usual in a Chelsea garden and this gives it a very contemporary feel.
