This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This allium forms generous clumps of mid-green leaves, from which sturdy, upright stems emerge in early summer, bearing large rounded flower heads. The lavender-purple flowers of 'Gladiator' blend well with most shades of pink, as well as stronger purples and plums. It's best planted amongst mound-forming perennials, which will help mask the foliage, which dies back before the flowers open.

  • Garden care:Avoid excessive moisture from late summer when dormant.
