This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moist to boggy, slightly acidic soil
  • Depth of water: 0-10cm
  • Rate of growth: average to fast
  • Hardiness: frost tender (will need winter protection)

Originating from tropical regions in Asia, where they are found growing in reliably moist soils and swamps, this handsome perennial will add an exotic feel to your pond margins in summer. Its impressively large (up to 60cm long) leaves will add real drama to the planting scheme.

  • Garden care: Keep in a pond basket and overwinter in a warm greenhouse, maintaining temperatures above 10C, and avoid overwatering. Then, during the summer months, plant it out in the margins of your pond, and bring it back under cover again when the nights start to get chilly. Cut back faded foliage to the base of the stems when necessary.
  • Harmful if eaten/skin & eye irritant
