Lily of the valley collection

lily-of-the-valley collection

Product Image
Lily-of-the-valley are best loved for their highly fragrant flowers, which appear in late spring and early summer. Happiest in a partially shaded position with humus-rich, reliably moist soil, they are ideally suited to the woodland garden or naturalised planting scheme. Tough perennials, they will steadily spread by underground rhizomes to form good-sized clumps, creating handsome, seasonal ground cover over time. If they get too big, Convallaria can be lifted and divided immediately after flowering, and small sections can be potted up and grown on before being brought indoors for a short period while they are in flower.

How to care for Convallaria collection:

Plant bare root rhizomes 5-8cm deep and 20cm apart. Divide and replant congested colonies in September, applying a generous mulch of composted leaf mould around the base of the plant.

What's included:

In this collection you will receive one of each of the following varieties:

  • Convallaria majalis: Strongly scented, bell-shaped flowers with waxy textured petals are followed by bright red berries. These appear on slender, upright to gently arching stems, which arise from amongst the lush green foliage. Grows to 23cm.

  • Convallaria majalis 'Prolificans': Branching stems carry tight clusters of small, rounded blooms, which create a showy effect. The perfumed flowers last very well after being cut and make wonderful additions to either a hand-tied posy or a vase. Grows to 18cm.

  • Convallaria majalis 'Rosea': Pendent, pale pink flowers, with flaring, pointed tips, open from the base of the graceful racemes. Plant it in drifts under deciduous shrubs, or allow it to creep through the front of a shady border. Grows to 20cm.
