Impressive clump-forming perennials that hail mainly from dry grassland, semi-arid and mountainous regions throughout central and western Asia. In early summer their thick, fleshy roots produce a loosely tufted rosette of strap-shaped leaves from which a magnificent, upright flowerspike emerges that can reach up to 3m tall. This is densely packed with hundreds of buds, which open slowly from the base to star-shaped flowers with showy stamens. Once it has finished flowering the whole plant will die back and remain dormant until the following spring. Plant in a sunny spot with shelter from strong winds in fertile, well-drained soil, creating a wide shallow hole, sitting the rootstock on a 5cm (2”) mound of coarse sand. Young growth can be susceptible to frost damage.

In each collection you will receive the following:

  • 1 × Eremurus stenophyllus
Bright yellow flowers with protruding, orange-tipped stamens turn a rusty brown as they mature from early to midsummer, giving the flowerspike a beautiful two-tone effect. A spectacular addition to prairie style planting schemes. Grows to 1.5m.

  • 1 × Eremurus 'White Beauty Favourite' (PBR)
Spectacular tapering plumes are clothed with brilliant white flowers for several weeks from early summer. Enjoy them in the garden, or cut them and add to arrangements inside the house where they will often last for many weeks. Grows to 1.25m.

  • 1 × Eremurus × isabellinus 'Pinokkio'
The elegant flowerspike of this cultivar is crowded with rusty orange buds opening to peach flushed, golden-yellow flowers. A relatively compact form, it tolerates more exposed positions where it will put on an eye-catching display. Grows to 1.2m.

  • Garden care: In September every three to five years carefully lift and divide congested clumps. Replant the strongest crown on a layer of sharp grit, spreading out the roots and covering them with a thin (5cm/2in) layer of soil. In frost-prone areas cover with a dry mulch of fern leaves.
  • CAUTION do not eat ornamental bulbs
