Lilium candidum

madonna lily bulb

Product Image
Fabulous, fragrant, trumpet-shaped pure white flowers emerge from swollen white flower buds and sit above tall stems of glossy dark green foliage in mid-summer. In cultivation for centuries, Lilium candidum has long been a firm favourite in the cottage garden, which suits it right down to the ground, as it will thrive in a spot where they are kept well fed, and tucked in amongst other plants, which will help shade them at the base.

How to care for Lilium candidum:

The foliage of this lily appears in the autumn, so do not be too concerned if your bulbs arrive with green shoots. This is a natural part of the bulbs’ life cycle and they can be planted as normal with their shoots intact. Unlike many other lilies, they also prefer to be planted quite close to the surface of the soil, so plant them about 5-10cm deep and 15cm apart. Stake with ring stakes or bamboo canes in spring before the flowers appear. Deadhead the faded blooms and cut the stems back to ground level at the end of autumn.
