This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: preferably acid, fertile, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This decorative deciduous shrub is mainly grown for its colourful foliage, which emerges a vibrant coppery red and turns deeper, purple-red as it matures. In midsummer, there are also rounded clusters of near-white flowers, which offer a striking contrast. Later in the summer and lasting well into autumn, these flowers are followed by glossy red berries. A highly ornamental plant that will liven things up in the shrub border.

  • Garden care: Once established, cut back up to one in four of the oldest stems to their base, after flowering. Then, apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant.
