Tilia platyphyllos

large-leaved lime

Product Image
A native, towering and majestic deciduous tree. With careful location consideration for its ultimate size, this fast-growing beauty showcases large, asymmetric heart-shaped leaves that transition from dark green above to pale green and downy below, culminating in a vibrant yellow autumn display. In midsummer, pendent clusters of fragrant pale yellow-green flowers grace the tree, rich in nectar and irresistible to bees, giving way to small nutlets ripening in late summer. Widely utilised in parklands, avenues, or mixed woodlands, Tilia platyphyllos is a long-lived tree that stands out with its glossy green leaves and dark bark and refrains from producing suckers at the trunk's base.

How to care for Tilia platyphyllos:

Avoid very dry conditions and keep out of strong winds. Limes prefer alkaline to neutral soil, but they will tolerate acidic soil. It requires minimal pruning, but do remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when it is completely dormant. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole.
