Aubrieta 'Purple Cascade' (Cascade Series) F1
aubrieta F1
- Position: full sun
- Soil: moderately fertile, well-drained, preferably neutral or alkaline soil
- Rate of growth: average to fast
- Flowering period: March to May
- Hardiness: fully hardy
Producing masses of rich purple flowers in spring, this aubrieta looks fab when allowed to tumble over the edge of a raised bed or provide ambling ground cover through an alpine bed. Flourishing in moderately fertile, well-drained, neutral or alkaline soil, this is an especially free-flowering variety.
Once well established, harden off seedlings and plant them out in a sunny spot, allowing 30cm between each. For optimal growth, plant Aubretia in well-draining soil with neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Provide at least half a day of sun to maintain its compact form and abundant flowering. Avoid planting in soils prone to waterlogging, especially in winter, and trim lightly after flowering to promote bushiness and potentially a second bloom. Feed lightly with a general-purpose liquid fertiliser in spring, and during dry spells, ensure the plant receives adequate water to support establishment. In early autumn, prune back 25-50% to maintain a dense, bushy appearance.
In a cold frame or unheated greenhouse, surface sow the seeds onto trays filled with good quality compost and water well. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin out and pot on individually.
