Masses of nectar-rich daisies top the feathery foliage of this sun-loving, annual wildflower in summer. It looks wonderful when allowed to naturalise in a meadow or orchard, but it’s also useful for adding summer colour to mixed borders with a softer, more relaxed feel.

Seeds sown in autumn will usually go on to flower earlier than those sown in spring.

How to care for Anthemis arvensis:

For meadow or open-ground settings, sow into well-drained, relatively poor to moderately fertile soil where the plants will receive plenty of sun. Avoid heavily enriched ground, as excessive fertility encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Keep the area weed-free while seedlings establish, then allow plants to grow naturally; occasional mowing or cutting after flowering can help maintain an open, low-competition sward. Avoid regular feeding and excessive watering once established, and leave some seed heads to mature if you want it to self-seed naturally.

Sowing instructions:

Sow directly outdoors from March to May, or in September and October for earlier flowering the following year. Scatter seed thinly over finely prepared, well-drained soil and press gently into the surface without covering deeply, as light helps germination.

Keep the soil evenly moist until seedlings are established, then allow plants to grow on with minimal maintenance.
