This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May and June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This undemanding deciduous shrub is a spectacular sight in autumn when it's green leaves turn vibrant shades of orange and red, but it's also very pretty in summer, when its stems are laden with sprays of hawthorn-like, white (or occasionally pink-flushed) flowers. It's often grown for its purplish red berries which ripen in autumn, as these can be harvested and used to make jams, jellies or tarts.
