Clusters of insignificant green flowers appear in May and June among small, lustrous, green leaves, each with a white margin that becomes pink-tinged in winter. This popular, bushy, semi-evergreen shrub makes excellent groundcover and is a mainstay of low-maintenance gardens, but it also makes a good foil for more ornamental flowering shrubs.
Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald Gaiety' is tough, and remains decorative throughout the year. It will also thrive in any well-drained border in sun or partial shade.

How to care for Euonymus fortunei Emerald Gaiety:
Plant in sun or partial shade in any well-drained soil, avoiding waterlogged spots. Water thoroughly after planting and during dry spells until established. Tip prune young plants in mid to late spring to encourage bushy growth and apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base each spring to conserve moisture and feed the soil.
In variegated forms, remove any plain green-leaved shoots as soon as they appear, cutting them back to their origin to maintain colourful leaves. Lightly trim to shape in late spring or midsummer if needed, and feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Euonymus are hardy, but protection from cold, drying winds will prevent leaf scorch.

This shrub is semi-evergreen, so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new foliage appears again in spring.
