The upright canes of this beautiful, clump-forming bamboo emerge green, but turn golden orange, then rich reddish brown in their second or third year. This effect is more pronounced when grown in a sunnier spot. These colourful canes form a dense clump and are clothed in slender green leaves, which are retained throughout the year. The dense, upright growth makes Red Panda ('Jiu') particularly good for hedging or narrow borders.
This bamboo has been specifically selected for its non-invasive, clump-forming nature, offering beauty and versatility whilst ensuring it remains a safe, attractive addition to your garden. Unlike running bamboos, the rootballs of these plants grow in tight, manageable clumps, if you prefer to keep the plants more compact than their natural spread suggests, you can plant them in a pot and sink this, slightly proud, into the ground. How to care for Fargesia Red Panda ('Jiu'):
Plant between 1m to 1.5m apart, watering regularly, to encourage establishment (increasing frequency of watering during dry spells). Mulch to seal in moisture and regulate temperature. If planting in pots/containers choose a loam based compost (John Innes 2 or 3). Fertilise between early spring and mid-summer with a high-nitrogen fertiliser. Prune dead or weak canes in late winter or early spring, and thin conjested clumps to improve air flow.
