Griselinia littoralis 'Variegata'
New Zealand privet
- Position: Full sun
- Soil: Moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil
- Rate of growth: Fast
- Flowering period: May
- Hardiness: Frost hardy (may need winter protection)
A dense, upright evergreen shrub with lustrous, grey-green streaked, bright apple-green leaves, with irregular, creamy-white margins. This variegated form of griselinia makes a marvellous semi-formal hedge or focal point for a sheltered, sunny, mixed or shrub border. Perfect for warm coastal gardens, try pairing it with the darker-leaved Choisya ternata (Mexican orange blossom), for a wonderful light-reflecting display.

In April or May lightly cut back any shoots that spoil the symmetry of the plant. After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant.
