The maroon-black foliage of this mainly evergreen form has a lustrous sheen, and as the season progresses, its colour becomes even more intense. The sprays of creamy white flowers, which appear in early and midsummer, look almost luminous against this dark backdrop, and they offer the perfect contrast. An ideal plant for the front of the border, it also makes a handsome addition to the patio when potted up.

This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
