A robust bog garden or shallow water perennial exhibiting green, fleshy, scallop-edged edges. Hydrocotyle novae-zeelandiae has excellent oxygenating features but demands careful management due to its rapid growth of long, creeping stems, particularly in smaller ponds. Inconspicuous greenish-brown flowers may emerge in small clusters from late spring into summer, adding subtle charm to its vibrant presence.
How to care for Hydrocotyle novae-zeelandiae:
Plant out in reliably moist or boggy soil, or pot up into a pond basket and place at the margins of a pond in shallow water no deeper than 20cm (8"). While low maintenance, cut back regularly to control spread. Divide congested clumps in early spring every few years and be mindful of not disposing of cuttings into local waterways where it could become invasive.
