Malus 'Cardinal'

Malus hupensis 'Princeton Cardinal'

5 year guarantee RHS award of garden merit Perfect for pollinators
bare root 125cm+ £39.99

This plant is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Sumptuous deep pink flowers and dark spring leaves set the spring tone for this beautiful, deciduous crab apple tree. In autumn, the crown of the tree is covered in small, deep red fruit. ‘Cardinal’ is a recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, and this medium-sized tree, initially upright and spreading with age, has good disease resistance to scab and mildew.

  • Garden care: Plant 'Cardinal' as soon as conditions allow (avoiding frozen and waterlogged soil). Choose a sheltered spot to protect emerging blossom. Incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake and support firmly. If required, prune in winter to remove any dead, diseased or crossing branches.
