This gorgeous, low-growing phlox, forms a dense, cushion-like mound of slender, semi-evergreen, foliage, which in late spring and early summer, is smothered in purple-eyed, white (or occasionally blush pink) flowers.
Phlox subulata 'Amazing Grace' will look great when allowed to meander through an alpine bed or rockery, but it's also ideal for filling gaps at the front of a sunny border. In very small gardens, it can be potted up for the balcony, windowsill or patio.
How to care for Phlox subulata Amazing Grace:
Thrives in any fertile, humus rich, moist soil in full sun or part shade. Plants will benefit from good air circulation and from watering in extended dry spells. Water at the base if necessary, rather than over the leaves to avoid issues with mildew.
Phlox are greedy plants, so apply a mulch 5-7cm (2-3in) deep of well-rotted garden compost or manure in early spring. Deadhead spent flowers to prevent reseeding.
If the leaves show signs of powdery mildew, cut down to the ground and dispose of the affected foliage, but do not compost it. Clear away the debris around plant to reduce the chances of reinfection. Cut back to the ground in autumn, and lift and divide as required, once established in autumn or spring.
